# Usage limits

> Rate limits for the Dataville API.

Two things limit your usage. Rate limits cap how many requests you can make and return **429** when you exceed them. Credits meter what each authenticated request costs and return **402** when your balance runs out. The response bodies for both are on [Troubleshooting](/api-reference/errors).

## Rate limits

### Anonymous requests

Requests without an API key are limited to 50 per 24 hours per IP address. The limit is shared by everyone using that address, and only successful responses count toward it. [Data lookup](/api-reference/data-sources/search-a-data-source) responses include `X-RateLimit-Limit` and `X-RateLimit-Remaining` headers so you can see how much of the allowance is left.

This limit does not apply to authenticated requests. See [Create an API key](/api-reference/authentication).

### Burst limit

All requests, with or without an API key, are limited to 100 per 15 minutes per IP address.

### Per-route limits

These routes have their own daily cap.

| Routes | Limit |
| - | - |
| [Export downloads](/api-reference/export-and-sql/download-one-source-as-csv-or-parquet) and [`POST /api/v1/query`](/api-reference/export-and-sql/run-a-sql-select-across-the-datasets) | 1,000 per day per account |
| [`POST /api/v1/datasets/{id}/query`](/api-reference/connected-sheets/run-sql-against-one-connected-sheet) and [`GET /api/v1/datasets/{id}/search`](/api-reference/connected-sheets/keyword-search-a-connected-sheet) | 1,000 per day per account |

Authenticated requests have no other request-count limit. They are governed by your credit balance.

## Credits

Authenticated requests are charged against a monthly credit balance in USD. Plans, per-request rates, top-offs, and what happens when you run out are on [Plans and credits](/plans-and-credits).

## Other limits

SQL queries have limits of their own.

| Limit | Value | When exceeded |
| - | - | - |
| SQL query length | 10,000 characters | 400 |
| SQL execution time | 30 seconds | 408 |
| Rows per SQL query | 1,000 | `LIMIT` is reduced to 1,000 |
