# Check business applications against SEC filings in Claude

> Upload a batch of applications to Claude and get back a CSV file that checks each one against SEC filings.

export const applicationsTemplate = `business_name,industry,state_of_incorporation,annual_revenue
The Home Depot,Home improvement retail,Delaware,$160B
IQVIA Holdings Inc.,Clinical research,North Carolina,$16.3B
Northwind Payments LLC,Payment processing,Delaware,$12M
`;

Before you approve a loan or a policy for a business, you can check what it put on its application against what it has reported to the SEC. A public company's filings include its legal name, industry, state of incorporation, and revenue. An 8-K filing reports a recent event, such as new debt or a change of control.

In this guide, you'll upload a spreadsheet of applications to Claude. Claude will look up each business in SEC EDGAR through Dataville and create a CSV file that shows which applications match their filings and which need a closer look.

## Before you start

You'll need:

* Claude on the web or desktop with Dataville added as a connector. See [Quickstart: Claude](/quickstart-claude) for the setup.
* The applications you want to check, with each business's legal name, industry, state of incorporation, and annual revenue.

## Check your applications

Once you've connected Dataville to Claude, you can check a batch of applications in a few minutes.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Turn on file creation in Claude">
    Claude needs file creation turned on to give you a file to download. In Claude, go to **Settings → Capabilities** and turn on **Code execution and file creation**.

    File creation is off by default on the Free, Pro, and Max plans. On Team and Enterprise plans it's on by default, and an owner controls it in **Organization settings → Capabilities**. To learn more, see the Claude Help Center article [Create and edit files with Claude](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/12111783-create-and-edit-files-with-claude).

    If you'd rather leave file creation off, you can still follow this guide. Ask Claude to reply with the CSV in the chat instead of creating a file, then copy it into a file of your own.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Download the applications template">
    The template has a column for each detail Claude will check, and the three example applications this guide uses.

    <a href={"data:text/csv;charset=utf-8," + encodeURIComponent(applicationsTemplate)} download="applications.csv" className="block">
      <Card title="applications.csv" icon="file-csv">
        Download the template with the example applications.
      </Card>
    </a>

    The file looks like this:

    ```csv theme={null}
    business_name,industry,state_of_incorporation,annual_revenue
    The Home Depot,Home improvement retail,Delaware,$160B
    IQVIA Holdings Inc.,Clinical research,North Carolina,$16.3B
    Northwind Payments LLC,Payment processing,Delaware,$12M
    ```

    Northwind Payments LLC is a made-up private company. To check your own applications, open the file in Excel or Google Sheets, replace the example rows with one row per application, and save it as a CSV file.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Ask Claude to check each application">
    Start a new chat in Claude and turn on the Dataville connector. Attach your `applications.csv` file and send this prompt:

    ```text theme={null}
    Search Dataville's edgar source for each business in applications.csv and create a CSV file named application-checks.csv. Use only the results from Dataville. Keep the original columns and add these:
    - filer_name: the company name on the filing Dataville returns. Leave it blank if the filing is from a different company.
    - filing_industry: the industry from the filing.
    - filing_state: the state of incorporation from the filing.
    - filing_revenue: the revenue from the filing's financials.
    - revenue_period: the start and end dates that the revenue covers.
    - latest_filing: the form type and date of the filing Dataville returns.
    - filing_url: the link to that filing.
    - recent_8k: the date of each 8-K filed in the last 30 days.
    - result: "match" if the industry and state of incorporation agree with the application, "mismatch" if either one doesn't, or "no filing" if the business has no filing of its own.
    ```

    Claude searches the `edgar` source for each business, and Claude's response lists a "Search a Dataville data source" step for each search. Dataville returns each company's most recent 10-K, 10-Q, or 8-K with its financial figures, and Claude creates the file from those results.

    If SEC EDGAR is unavailable, Dataville answers from its stored copy and the search result says the data may be out of date. Run the check again later before you rely on it. See [Response format](/response-format#stale-results) to learn more about stale results.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review the results">
    Claude replies with a summary of what it found and the file `application-checks.csv` for you to download. For the example applications, these are the columns that decide the result:

    | business\_name | filer\_name | filing\_state | recent\_8k | result |
    | - | - | - | - | - |
    | The Home Depot | HOME DEPOT, INC. | DE | None | match |
    | IQVIA Holdings Inc. | IQVIA HOLDINGS INC. | DE | 2026-09-23, 2026-09-09 | mismatch |
    | Northwind Payments LLC | None | None | None | no filing |

    The Home Depot application matches its filing, and the company hasn't filed an 8-K in the last 30 days.

    The IQVIA application is a mismatch because it gives North Carolina as the state of incorporation, and the filing says Delaware. IQVIA has also filed two 8-Ks in the last 30 days. The one from September 23, 2026 reports a new material agreement and a new financial obligation, so open it from the `filing_url` column and read it before you decide.

    Northwind Payments LLC has no filing of its own. Most businesses that apply for credit or insurance aren't SEC filers, and for those the `edgar` source returns the closest match from another company's filings. Claude leaves the filing columns empty, and you'll need to check the business with your own documents.

    Save `application-checks.csv` with the applications. Anyone who reviews a decision later can open it in Excel or Google Sheets, see what you checked, and follow the links to the same filings.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Compare revenue with each application">
    The revenue in a filing covers the period of that report, which isn't always a full year. Check `revenue_period` before you compare it with the annual revenue on an application:

    | business\_name | annual\_revenue | filing\_revenue | revenue\_period |
    | - | - | - | - |
    | The Home Depot | \$160B | \$89.63B | 2026-02-02 to 2026-08-02 |
    | IQVIA Holdings Inc. | \$16.3B | \$4.15B | 2026-01-01 to 2026-03-31 |

    Home Depot's most recent filing is a 10-Q, a quarterly report. Its revenue covers the first six months of Home Depot's fiscal year, and it's a little over half of the \$160 billion a year on the application.

    IQVIA's most recent filing is an 8-K, and an 8-K has no financial statements. Dataville returns the newest figures the SEC has published for IQVIA instead, which are from its first-quarter report and cover January 1 to March 31, 2026. That's about a quarter of the \$16.3 billion a year IQVIA stated.

    When the period is a full year, the most recent report is a 10-K, and you can compare the revenue with the application directly.
  </Step>

## Next steps

You can run the same checks from code when a business signs up, and keep watching the businesses you approve for new filings.
