# Introduction

> One API for external data in AI applications, from Claude or from code.

Dataville is one API for the external data your AI application needs. You can ask for a company's most recent SEC filing, a Wikipedia article, or an arXiv paper from Claude, from another AI tool, or from code, and get the same JSON shape back from every source. The catalog covers Wikipedia, SEC EDGAR, arXiv, the US Census, Project Gutenberg, USDA FoodData, Papers with Code, OpenAlex, PyPI, and Stack Exchange.

Every source returns the same JSON shape: an `id`, `title`, `body`, `source`, and source-specific `metadata` such as the original URL or filing date, so results are easy to store, cite, and pass to a model.

## Ask from Claude

Add Dataville to Claude as a connector, then ask in plain language:

```text theme={null}
Using Dataville, what is Home Depot's most recent SEC filing?
```

Claude searches the `edgar` source and answers with the form type, the filing date, and headline figures from the filing. The same connector works in Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, and VS Code. See [Quickstart: Claude](/quickstart-claude) for the setup.

## Try it from the browser

No account or API key is needed. Pick a source, type keywords, and press send:

<div id="dv-try">
  <div className="dv-try-bar">
    <span className="dv-try-method">GET</span>
    <span className="dv-try-host">api.dataville.com/</span>
    <span className="dv-try-slash">/</span>

    <input id="dv-try-keywords" type="text" defaultValue="Apollo 11" aria-label="Search keywords" />

    <button id="dv-try-run" type="button">Send</button>
  </div>

  <div className="dv-try-inner">
    <div className="dv-try-strip">
      <pre id="dv-try-curl">
        {`curl "https://api.dataville.com/wiki/Apollo%2011"`}
      </pre>

      <button id="dv-try-copy" type="button">Copy</button>
    </div>

    <div className="dv-try-strip">
      <span id="dv-try-status" className="dv-try-title">Example response</span>
      <span className="dv-try-hint">press Send for live data</span>
    </div>

    <pre id="dv-try-output">
      {`{\n  "status": "success",\n  "account_state": "anonymous",\n  "data": {\n    "id": "wiki_en_apollo_11",\n    "title": "Apollo 11",\n    "body": "Apollo 11 (July 16–24, 1969) was the American spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon...",\n    "source": "wikipedia",\n    "metadata": { "url": "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo%2011" }\n  },\n  "usage": { "requests_remaining": 49, "request_limit": 50 }\n}`}
    </pre>
  </div>
</div>

`data` is always the single most relevant result. Try `edgar` with a company name for its latest SEC filing and headline financials, or `arxiv` with a paper title.

## Beyond single lookups

The same sources are available in other ways.

* Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, and VS Code can search every source over MCP. See [Connect an AI tool](/ai-tools).
* You can download a whole source as CSV, Parquet, or a DuckDB database. See [List available exports](/api-reference/export-and-sql/list-available-exports). Parquet exports support range requests, so DuckDB on your own machine can read them directly without downloading the file.
* You can query across sources with SQL. [Run a SQL SELECT across the datasets](/api-reference/export-and-sql/run-a-sql-select-across-the-datasets) runs a read-only `SELECT` over every exportable source, with joins across sources, up to 1,000 rows per query.
