Two things limit your usage. Rate limits cap how many requests you can make and return 429 when you exceed them. Credits meter what each authenticated request costs and return 402 when your balance runs out. The response bodies for both are on Troubleshooting.

Rate limits

Anonymous requests

Requests without an API key are limited to 50 per 24 hours per IP address. The limit is shared by everyone using that address, and only successful responses count toward it. Data lookup responses include X-RateLimit-Limit and X-RateLimit-Remaining headers so you can see how much of the allowance is left. This limit does not apply to authenticated requests. See Create an API key.

Burst limit

All requests, with or without an API key, are limited to 100 per 15 minutes per IP address.

Per-route limits

These routes have their own daily cap. Authenticated requests have no other request-count limit. They are governed by your credit balance.

Credits

Authenticated requests are charged against a monthly credit balance in USD. Plans, per-request rates, top-offs, and what happens when you run out are on Plans and credits.

Other limits

SQL queries have limits of their own.
